Choose the channel around the buying situation
Google Ads and Meta Ads can both support retail acquisition. Start with what a suitable customer already knows, how they discover the product and what evidence would make a purchase worthwhile. A merchant selling a familiar replacement part faces a different discovery problem from a merchant introducing an unfamiliar product.
The choice is not permanent. The first channel should answer a useful commercial question without splitting a limited budget into campaigns too small to evaluate. A campaign's attributed sales do not establish incremental demand or profit.
A practical selection matrix
| Situation | Question to investigate | Initial option |
|---|---|---|
| Customers search for the product or a close substitute | Can a relevant query reach an eligible product with a competitive total offer? | Search or Shopping, with verified purchase measurement. |
| The product needs explanation or demonstration | Can a clear creative concept make the problem and use case understandable? | Meta creative and destination testing, with an explicit learning budget. |
| Relevant visitors cannot complete an order | Is there a reproducible technical fault or unresolved buying question? | Repair or investigate the purchase journey before buying more traffic. |
These are starting hypotheses. Check the actual search results, product economics and available assets. Neither channel is universally cheaper or more profitable.
Compare contribution, not platform screenshots
Use the same net-sales definition and reporting period when comparing channels. A platform's revenue attribution may overlap another platform's claim. Keep a separate order ledger, identify new versus returning customers where appropriate, and account for cancellations and returns.
In a synthetic example, two channels each report $5,000 of attributed revenue. If one sells products with much higher delivery and return costs, equal reported ROAS does not mean equal commercial value. Use our ROAS and CAC worksheet method to define the cost boundary before comparing the result.
Design one first learning milestone
- Name the product group, target buyer and country.
- Verify the offer, inventory, delivery terms and purchase measurement.
- State the uncertainty: search relevance, creative understanding or purchase friction.
- Choose one primary outcome and a review window appropriate to the buying cycle.
- Define a spend limit, approval owner and the conditions for changing or stopping the test.
Creative production and landing-page work need owners too. A Meta campaign cannot test a demonstration concept if no usable demonstration is supplied. A Shopping campaign cannot establish product appeal if important variants are ineligible.
When specialist help is useful
Commission channel management when the business can explain the offer, fulfil orders and review commercial results. Start with a measurement or store review when those foundations are uncertain. Compare Google Ads management, Meta Ads management and e-commerce CRO as different engagements rather than buying every service at once.
For Google's retail campaign scope, see its Performance Max overview. Available campaign controls and account eligibility should be reviewed during scoping. No launch budget or return is promised by this comparison.
